Every parent knows what it's like to have a child who struggles to settle at bedtime. Whether they're full of energy, asking for one more drink, or simply finding it difficult to switch off, evenings can quickly become stressful.
The good news is that children often thrive on routine and consistency. Small changes can make a big difference over time.
These are the eight things that have helped our family create calm, peaceful bedtimes.

1. Create a Consistent Bedtime Routine
Children love knowing what comes next.
A simple routine helps signal to their brain that the day is ending and it's time to sleep.
Our routine has always been:
Bath or shower
Brush teeth
Read together
Say our prayers
Bed
The routine doesn't need to be complicated. The important thing is doing it in roughly the same order each evening.
2. Avoid Screens Before Bed
Televisions, tablets, phones and gaming devices can all keep children's minds active when they should be winding down.
If possible, try to avoid screens for around two hours before bedtime.
Instead, encourage quieter activities such as:
Reading
Drawing
Jigsaws
Colouring
Conversation
Listening to calming music
3. Keep Bedtime Firm
One of the biggest bedtime battles often comes from allowing bedtime to stretch later and later. If bedtime is 7:30pm, try to keep it close to 7:30pm every evening.
Children generally feel more secure when they know the boundaries are consistent.
4. Tidy the Bedroom Together
A cluttered room can sometimes feel busy and overwhelming. Before bedtime, spend five minutes putting toys away together. A calm, tidy bedroom often creates a calmer environment for sleep.
5. Try a Gentle Meditation
Children often struggle because their minds are racing. A simple imagination exercise can help them relax. One of our favourites is imagining we're in our own uniquely designed spaceships with all our cuddlies and essentials, travelling through space - God's beautiful creation, floating peacefully amongst the stars, feeling completely safe and loved. The aim isn't to excite their imagination but to slow their breathing and help them relax.
6. Play Gentle Sleep Music
Soft instrumental music, gentle piano or calming nature sounds can create a peaceful atmosphere.
Keep the volume low and avoid songs with energetic rhythms or lyrics that encourage children to stay alert.
7. Be Consistent When It's Time to Sleep
Many children will naturally test the boundaries at bedtime.
Whichever settling approach you choose as a family, consistency is usually more effective than changing the rules each evening. Some parents find that giving children a few minutes to settle themselves works well, while others prefer to reassure them briefly before leaving again. The important thing is to avoid accidentally turning bedtime into an hour-long negotiation.
8. Keep the Bedroom Dark
Darkness tells our bodies that it's time to sleep. During the summer months, blackout curtains or blinds can make a big difference, especially for younger children who may not understand why it's still light outside. A darker room often helps children fall asleep more easily and stay asleep for longer.
Final Thoughts
Helping children sleep well isn't about finding one magic solution. It's usually the small, consistent habits that make the greatest difference. A peaceful bedtime routine doesn't just help children, it creates a calmer evening for the whole family. If you begin with just one or two of these ideas and stick with them consistently, you may be surprised how much easier bedtime becomes.
